Information

West Cork Music – the organisation behind the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, the West Cork Literary Festival and Masters of Tradition – is pursuing a Capital Project which will see the creation of an Education Centre alongside a world-class concert venue in the heart of Bantry town. (You can find details of the project at https://bantrymusiccentre.ie).

McCullough Mulvin Architects have been appointed as the design team after an international competition. We are now working on developing their stunning framework design for the venue and Education Centre, which will – as flexibly as possible – support music learning from grassroots up in Bantry for years to come.

As we work on those designs, we are keen to gain a better understanding of the kinds of spaces and resources needed to support ETB courses, specifically:

Music Management and Sound – Levels 1 and 2
Radio and Podcasting – Levels 1 and 2
Traditional Irish Music – Levels 1 and 2 (2 is not yet offered in Cork, but we are looking ahead)

We would really appreciate your input so that we can give the architects and the West Cork Music Capital Project team a better understanding of how ETB students can be supported.

Musical equipment requirements

We understand that students will be required to engage in practical musicianship, live performance, and studio & live sound engineering, as well as learning about music law, song-writing, marketing, and promotion. What types of equipment, facilities and resources will this involve (fixed/movable). And could they be accommodated in the spaces already mentioned?

Staff resources

Are there any spaces/facilities staff would require? (e.g. desks/copying etc.)

Are there other space/time factors we would need to think about?

e.g. storage

Course Equipment / IT Resources

In broad terms, what kinds of equipment/resources/software would we need to plan for (iPads, fixed computers, software licences)?

Accessibility and inclusion

A key aim for us will be to meet the highest standards of accessibility, and our Education Centre is being planned in accordance with the principles of universal design. Are there any specific things that you would recommend or suggest we consider to make this programme as accessible and inclusive as possible?

We understand that students will be required to undertake 60 hours’ work experience at an on-site radio broadcasting studio as part of this programme. Is this requirement included in the time noted above?

e.g. base classroom, practice rooms, library, other (e.g. breakout rooms) Include rooms required for: ensemble performance classes, weekly one-to-one instrumental tuition from experienced performers, and regular guest workshops presented by some of the finest exponents of traditional Irish music as well as industry practitioners.

Musical Equipment Requirements

We understand that students will be required to enhance their knowledge and understanding of traditional music while placing a strong emphasis on practical musicianship, complemented by opportunities to perform, manage events, and learn about the music industry. What types of equipment, facilities, and resources will this involve (fixed/movable). And could they be accommodated in the spaces already mentioned?
